Swim Lessons and Autism

Does your little one love the water? Do they just jump for joy when they hear they’re going swimming in the pool or at the beach, or are they a little frightened? Have they been taught to swim? Here’s two local programs that can help your child acclimate to the water and learn how to swim!

Goldfish Swim School

The Goldfish Swim School is a national company that teaches children as little as 4 months to 12 years the basics of swimming and builds foundational skills necessary for swimming. They even work with kids who may want to take part in competitive swimming!

Goldfish welcomes any and all children to take part in their swim classes! In fact, they highly recommend bringing in children with special needs, especially autism, considering that drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children with autism. To check out their special accommodations they provide special need students, including smaller class sizes and working as fast or as slow with your child as they need, click the link to their article below!

The closest Goldfish Swim School is here in Ann Arbor on W Stadium Street. Classes are usually 30 minutes a week and feature a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Lessons start at just $31 per lesson!! If you’re interested in taking the whole family or wish to swim with your child, they do offer family swim hours that don’t require a reservation or a membership! Their Adaptive Aquatics program promotes comfort and safety in addition to reaching the basic goals of every swimmer. This program recommends these children start in private classes to ensure proper instruction and individualized lesson plans are structured based on the goals and interests of each swimmer.
