It has been a busy first quarter of 2015 and we’re extremely excited to announce that we’ve recently hired Deanna Coker, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst to continue to deliver a high level of ABA therapy to our growing list of clients. We thought it would be a good idea to feature Deanna in a blog this month to not only put a face to a name, but to also show our clients why we’re so excited about Deanna joining the CBF team!
Can you tell us a little bit about your experience in the field? I have worked with individuals, children and adults, with autism and developmental disabilities in the community setting for the last 7 years (mainly in and around Middle Tennessee). I graduated from Western Michigan University in 2008 with my Master’s Degree in Psychology, with a concentration in ABA.
Why have you chosen to work with children with Autism? I was assigned to a research project during my undergraduate senior year that interviewed young adults with special needs in a local high school. The interview consisted of questions regarding perceptions of their education so far, their home life, and their self-image. Many of the students rated their education and self-image very low. Since that humbling experience, I have wanted to help children with special needs get a better start in life in the hopes of making their lives better.
Are you originally from Michigan? I grew up in New Baltimore, MI. I left Michigan after high school graduation in 2001. What made you move back to Michigan? I moved back to Michigan to be closer to my family. Now that I have children of my own, I wanted them to grow up knowing who their family was.
What made you choose to want to work with Creating Brighter Futures? My good friend, Jessica Irish, has been trying to get me to move back to Michigan for a while. When a position came open at CBF, she immediately called me to let me know there was an opportunity for me. I agreed that day!
What are you most excited about in your new role at CBF? I am most excited about the ability to supervise technicians who want to obtain their BCBA one day. I enjoy playing a role in molding the future of ABA therapy!
Join us in welcoming Deanna Coker to her new role at Creating Brighter Futures! Make sure to stop in and say hi to Deanna the next time you are at CBF!
